Why summer tutoring isn't just for struggling students

When many families think about tutoring, they picture a student who’s fallen behind—someone who’s struggling to read at grade level, grasp math concepts, or stay organized in class. But the truth is, tutoring isn’t just for struggling students. In fact, summer tutoring can benefit every kind of learner—from those who need to catch up, to those who want to get ahead, to those who simply want to maintain their skills over the long break. At Treehouse Learning and Development, we believe summer is one of the most valuable times for academic growth, and we design our summer tutoring sessions with that flexibility and purpose in mind.

One of the biggest reasons to consider tutoring over the summer is to prevent the well-known “summer slide.” Even high-performing students can lose valuable academic ground during the summer months when learning routines stop. Research shows that students can lose up to two months of math and reading progress during a typical summer break. With just a few hours of structured academic support each week, students can retain what they’ve learned and start the next school year with confidence and momentum.

Summer is also the perfect time for students to work on skills in a more relaxed and personalized setting. Without the daily pressures of homework, testing, or large classrooms, students can slow down and really focus on strengthening their foundations. For advanced learners, tutoring sessions can also be used to dive deeper into enrichment areas—such as creative writing, critical reading, advanced problem solving, or research projects. These kinds of sessions often feel more like exploration than schoolwork, and they help students develop a genuine love of learning.
Another powerful reason for summer tutoring is to prepare for the upcoming school year. Students can preview the content and expectations of the next grade level, which helps reduce anxiety and boosts readiness from day one. Whether your child is entering third grade or transitioning to middle school, a proactive academic plan can make all the difference. We also use summer as a time to build critical executive functioning skills—like organization, time management, and study habits—that support success across every subject.

At Treehouse Learning and Development, we’re excited to offer a full range of summer tutoring services designed to meet the needs of all learners. Our highly trained instructional specialists provide one-on-one support in reading, writing, and math, and we also offer specialized instruction for students with learning differences or IEPs. Each session is tailored to your child’s learning style, goals, and pace—whether they need intervention, enrichment, or a mix of both. We offer both in-person and online options to fit your summer schedule. We also are excited to partner with local Community-Based Organizations to bring instructional components to their already amazing Summer Programming! We’re happy about partnering with Project H.O.O.D. in the city of Chicago for the 3rd year and Country Club Hills Community Center for the 2nd year! If these programs are near you we would love to service your student!

If you’ve ever wondered whether summer tutoring is worth it, the answer is yes—and not just for students who are behind. Summer is a unique opportunity to grow skills, build confidence, and set the stage for a successful new school year.
